EcoVelocity powers the greatest eco test drive - September 15, 2011

Eco News

EcoVelocity, the UK’s first eco motoring festival held at Battersea Power Station last week delivered the UK’s largest eco test drive event with almost 7,000 consumer drives of electric, low and ultra low carbon vehicles driven round the bespoke test track.

the show offered. Over 1500 visitors participated in the Honda Racing Bug Activity, Get On - the campaign to encourage more people to ride motorcycles introduced 350 visitors to the benefits of riding a bike and took numerous bookings for the future.

The SEAT Young Driver scheme which allowed children 11 years an older to drive a car, were inundated every show day and the Honda ‘my first licence’ scheme was fully-booked each day within 15 minutes of opening.

Boris Johnson officially opened EcoVelocity 2011

The show was officially opened by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who said: ‘It is tremendous that EcoVelocity, the biggest eco car show in Europe, is demonstrating what is available right now as well as the future of clean, green motoring. It fits perfectly into my plan to make London the electric vehicle capital of Europe.”

Membership to the Source London electric charging scheme almost tripled during the show. Annual membership enables card holders to charge up their electric vehicle at any Source London point as many times as required.

Giles Brown, event organiser, said: “EcoVelocity was a first of its kind; the objective was to raise the profile of the latest low and ultra-low carbon cars by providing a very hands on environment for visitors. The event culminated in a very busy ride-and-drive event.

He went on to say: “As a launch show, it was impossible to predict visitor numbers; our original forecast was too high. The currency exhibitors use to judge the event is with quality test drives and leads, not just footfall. It was abundantly clear that we delivered those in spades, with car makers providing, on average, 400 test drives during the show period.

“Our objective going forward is to find a way to increase event capacity and, in turn, increase overall visitor numbers.”

Neville Staines, National Events Manager for Citroen, commented: “EcoVelocity proved to be a big success for Citroen, with more than 440 test drives completed over the four days. We also took a considerable number of high-quality sales leads, with interest not just in C-Zero (our full electric car) but also for our full range of low-emission vehicles. Considering this was the first time the show has taken place, I could not be happier with the results.”

Volkswagen UK’s Kate Thompson commented: “Volkswagen UK was very pleased with the

VW stand at EcoVelocity

EcoVelocity event. We were able to meet a large number of visitors, who showed a keen interest in our BlueMotion products and brand as well as the chance to demonstrate these vehicles’ performance on the test track.”

Sue Goddard, Conference and Events Manager, Honda Cars, said: “EcoVelocity provided an excellent platform for Honda to showcase its Hybrid range of cars.”

Lance Bates, Toyota and Lexus GB commented “For us it was a cost effective way to not only build awareness of but also to showcase and demonstrate our Hybrid technology. It also gave the opportunity for visitors to the show to be among the first in the U.K to test drive the all new Yaris.

Considering this was the first time the event has been staged we were pleased at the number of test drives achieved across both brands”.

Mayor of London opens EcoVelocity - September 6, 2011

Eco News

The Mayor, Boris Johnson will open EcoVelocity, the largest Euroopean low carbon motor festival in support of his vision to make London the electric vehicle leader of Europe. The Mayor will officially launch the show by leading a cavalcade of vehicles around the innovative EcoVelocity test track.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will open EcoVelocity 2011.

The unique four-day low carbon outdoor motoring festival from September 8 - 11 at Battersea Power station will bring to life a new world of motoring for prospective buyers that are keen to gather information and experience the latest in eco-transport.

Visitors will not only get the chance to see, up close and personal, a range of electric and low carbon vehicles from some of the world’s leading manufacturers but also the opportunity to test drive electric vehicles providing many with their first taste of the electric vehicle driving experience against the backdrop of the iconic power station.

The Mayor recently launched London’s largest electric charge point network to support the uptake of greener vehicles. Source London currently has over 200 publicly accessible charge points installed with the aim of having 1,300 points in place by 2013. Increasing the number of charge points will make more electric vehicle drivers feel able to top up while out and about, reducing fears of ‘range anxiety’ and giving them the confidence to switch to electric vehicles. By creating a single city wide network, Source London is removing the need for drivers to sign up with each charge point owner or borough. To inform current and potential drivers of this and other benefits of the system a section of the show will be dedicated to Source London with staff on hand to provide in-depth information about the network.

Manufacturers showing their latest low carbon vehicles will be Citroen, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, SEAT, Toyota, Lexus, Vauxhall, Volvo, Volkswagen and Mia Electric.

The EcoVelocity motoring festival is organised by IMIE, organisers of the British Motor Show and Metro, the World’s largest free newspaper with 3.3 million daily readers across 50 cities nationwide.

“EcoVelocity fully complements Source London’s journey to improve the air quality of London and to place London as the electric vehicle capital of Europe. London is a great venue for this industry first, where London goes the rest are sure to follow. The festival will show motorists lots of no compromise everyday personal transport solutions that will reduce their carbon footprint”. Commented Giles Brown EcoVelocity Founder and Event Director.

EcoVelocity offers a memorable day for all ages, festival visitors will be able to:

  • Test drive the latest low-carbon cars and motorcycles around a specially designed track
  • Get up close and personal with the amazing green supercars of the future
  • Let the kids loose with two driving experiences for 5-11 and 11-17 year olds
  • Experience the winners of the auspicious What Car? Green Awards in daily track parades

Nissan drives new technology debate at EcoVelocity - September 2, 2011

Eco News

Nissan is leading the charge with its participation at the inaugural eco motor show, EcoVelocity, at Battersea Power Station on September 8-11.

The company will showcase its technologically ground-breaking Micra DIG-S engine, as well as its world-beating 100% electric LEAF.

Nissan will also spark debate, by hosting an EV discussion on its stand in conjunction with TheChargingPoint.com, between 3.15pm and 4pm on Saturday, September 10.

Hosted by TheChargingPoint.com columnist, Robert Llewellyn, expert panellists will include Smooth Radio DJ and Nissan LEAF owner, Mark Goodier, Richard Candler from the Nissan Technology Centre Europe (NTC-E) and Sian Berry, from the Campaign for Better Transport. One final guest is yet to be confirmed.

The LEAF and Micra DIG-S will spearhead Nissan’s four-car display on its striking stand, while the LEAF will also be available to test drive on EcoVelocity’s specially-constructed track, built in the shadow of the famous Battersea Power Station.

Nissan’s LEAF has been at the forefront of electric vehicle development from the beginning. With a range of up to 110 miles between charges thanks to its in-house developed compact electric motor and inverter.

It has already been lauded as European Car of the Year and has set the standard for electric car safety, being the first car to be awarded a five-star safety rating by independent body, EuroNCAP.

Meanwhile, Nissan has now introduced a new petrol engine for the Micra which produces just 95g/km of CO2, making it one of the lowest in the world today.

The DIG-S is a direct injection unit with a supercharger and delivers excellent performance, frugal economy and exceptionally low emissions, making it a perfect engine for Nissan’s small city car.

The engine is packed with technical innovations and the results produce 72kW (98PS) and 142Nm, while CO2 are 95g/km for the manual version and 115 g/km for the CVT version.

While the cars on display are sure to attract plenty of attention, Nissan’s stand will also be the centre of debate on the Saturday of the EcoVelocity show.

The EV debate will feature a 30-minute discussion among the panellists, followed by 15 minutes of questions from the audience. Topics to be discussed are:

- Range anxiety – real or myth?
- The UK charging network – does it need state support?
- How green are electric cars?
- How much will electric cars cost second-hand (residual value)?
- What will get ‘Joe Public’ to buy electric?
- Batteries – are they an Achilles Heel?

Hyundai to Electrify EcoVelocity with UK Debut of ix35 FCEV - September 1, 2011

Eco News

Hyundai has today announced that the ix35 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) will have its UK debut at EcoVelocity.

EcoVelocity visitors can be among the first in the world to experience future travel in a hydrogen-powered car, with passenger rides available in the ix35 FCEV. The vehicle is Hyundai’s third-generation FCEV and it demonstrates the company’s work on cutting-edge alternative fuels.

Boasting the same convenience as today’s vehicles powered by traditional internal combustion engines, the ix35 FCEV has a driving range of 360miles (580 Km), a maximum speed of 100 mph and zero-to-62mph time of 12.8 seconds. The fuel cell stack can operate at sub-zero temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius, and unlike a petrol-powered car, the ix35’s only emissions are water vapour.

This vehicle moves Hyundai closer to the commercialisation of fuel cell electric vehicles, and the aim is to bring an FCEV to market in the next few years.

Earlier this year, the Hyundai Motor Group signed a memorandum of understanding with four Northern European countries to operate test fleets of FCEVs. Test drives have already been carried out in Korea and Copenhagen.

Hyundai UK’s managing director, Tony Whitehorn, commented: “We are extremely excited to be showcasing the ix35 FCEV in the UK for the first time at EcoVelocity. Hyundai is a world leader in the development of hydrogen-powered technology and is constantly researching and developing modes of transportation that use alternative fuels at the Eco-technology research institute in Mabuk, Korea.

The ultimate goal would be to see zero-emission vehicles on UK roads within the next few years; however, the market and local infrastructure will be the real determinant of this. In the interim, Hyundai is working hard to make internal combustion engines as efficient as possible”.

Also featuring on the Hyundai stand will be the sub-100g/km CO2 i10 Blue and the recently launched i20 Blue. The i10 Blue is powered by a 1.0-litre Kappa three-cylinder petrol engine returning an impressive 67.3mpg combined. The i20 Blue is powered by a 1.4-litre CRDi four-cylinder engine with 76.4mpg on a combined cycle. Due to their low emissions, both vehicles offer exemption from VED and the London Congestion Charge.

Visitors will also be able to see Hyundai’s two newest models on the stand - the all-new i40 Tourer, due to go on-sale on September 8 and the Veloster coupe due to launch later this year.

EcoVelocity will run from September 8 -11th at Battersea Power Station and will feature the latest green models, including electric, hybrid and low CO2-emitting cars, as well as providing test drives on a specially-constructed circuit in the shadow of the famous power station.

FCX Clarity: Quite simply, the world’s first production fuel cell car. It’s not a concept or experimental prototype, but a fully-certified vehicle built on a factory line like any other model. The clever bit is that driving it, using all of its 270-mile range and even filling it up with hydrogen is just as easy as owning any other Honda. It is an electric car that generates its electricity on board using compressed hydrogen as an energy carrier and emits only water vapour from its tailpipe.

Insight:Refreshed for 2011, the Insight is a five-door family car that’s high on practicality as well as environmental considerations. Powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine and supported by Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology, it returns combined fuel economy of 64.2mpg with CO2 emissions of just 101g/km. Every Insight features Eco-Assist, Honda’s innovative driver-coaching system that encourages more frugal use of fuel.

CR-Z: The world’s first sporty hybrid features a stunning exterior design that’s like nothing else on the road today. Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but Honda’s IMA hybrid technology and a six-speed manual gearbox mean a performance-oriented and fun driving experience is guaranteed. Yet the CR-Z still delivers figures of 56.5mpg and just 117g/km.

Jazz Hybrid: Honda’s newest hybrid car brings the advantages of the petrol/electric powertrain to supermini owners for the first time. Everything that’s loved about the regular Jazz is still present; including the ultra-versatile Magic Seats, but it emits only 104g/km of CO2 and fuel economy is an astonishing 64.2mpg – a 23 per cent improvement of the best-selling version of the Jazz.
